Mallorca vs Girona Preview, Prediction and Betting Tips

  • Date: 3 March, Sunday
  • Kick-off Time: 5:30 PM (GMT)
  • Stadium: Estadi Mallorca Son Moix

Mallorca vs Girona Preview:

The vibrant Son Moix stadium will see Mallorca take on Girona on matchday 27. The two sides met only a month ago when Mallorca shocked Girona by knocking them out of the Copa del Rey. Since then, Mallorca have gone to book a spot in the final of the Spanish cup for the first time since their famous run 21 years ago.

So it’s not shocking that the hosts will be in good spirits on Sunday. While the residents of Son Moix have struggled to win consistently in the league, they seem secure enough to safeguard their position in La Liga for next season. Mallorca currently sits in 16th place in LaLiga, 6 points off the drop zone. If they continue like they have all season, they are bound to finish in the middle of the league safely.

Meanwhile, on the other side are the underdogs in this year’s La Liga title race, Girona. The club from Catalonia have managed to rock European football with their run in the league this campaign. Girona have accumulated an impressive 59 points this season, and currently sit in 2nd spot ahead of the likes of FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

However, the club has struggled recently in the midst of a tough schedule. They have fallen six points behind league leaders Real Madrid. A shock knockout from the Copa del Rey against Mallorca hasn’t done their momentum a ton of good either. With Mallorca on the horizon again, Girona will be eager to avenge the brutal exit handed to them last month.

Mallorca vs Girona Team News:

Mallorca:

Javier Aguirre took over Mallorca back in March 2022 and since then the club hasn’t looked back. The Spanish gaffer was their knight in shining armor, securing Mallorca from a relegation scare back then. Now, Aguirre has led them to their first cup final since 2003. Talk about an underdog story! Faced with Real Sociedad midweek, Mallorca did well to defend and came away victorious against La Real on penalties in the Copa del Rey. In the league, Mallorca hasn’t won on the last two matchdays, but they will hardly be concerned by that.

Mallorca enter the battle at Son Moix with only one injury, but will still woe the absentee given his importance. On Sunday, the Mallorcans will be without right-back Pablo Maffeo, who has been incredible this season. Unfortunately, Maffeo sustained a freak knee injury and was sidelined till March end. Mallorca will also be without Siebe van der Heyden via suspension.

Girona:

The underdogs in the title race, Girona, have been a pleasant surprise this season. The club has played some fluid football all season, and have delighted viewers with their attacking intent. However, since January the club has struggled to win games due to a tough schedule. In their last five outings in La Liga, the club has managed to win only two games, and have dropped crucial points in the other three.

While this drop in form might be a little worrying, it was also the phase in which the form of talisman Aleix Garcia had dropped. With him recovering from fatigue, Girona looked absolutely fine on the weekend as they rode to a comfortable 3-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano.

The Catlonians will enter the battle at Son Moix without the services of veteran Daley Blind. The center-back has been crucial to the team’s build-up play, and have struggled slightly without him. Blind’s leg injury will sideline him till late March.

This season the two clubs have faced each other twice, once in the Copa del Rey and once in LaLIga. Girona trashed Mallorca in a 5-3 victory at home earlier in the season in La Liga. Mallorca vs Girona Prediction:

Both the clubs have written underdog stories in Spanish football this season. Girona’s unbelievable run in La Liga up till now and Mallorca’s in Copa del Rey, both deserve to be celebrated. However, in the battle of the two underdogs, only one can emerge victorious. Both teams have looked to play attacking football against each other this season. The score lines of their recent fixtures are testimony to that. Girona needs to keep winning to compete for the league title, while a cheerful Mallorca will look to build on their recent victory in the cup. On paper, it is unlikely that Mallorca would be able to upset Girona yet again. For Girona, the tie will be a chance to avenge their wounded soul. If previous games are anything to go by, Mallorca vs Girona is the tie of the weekend in LaLiga.

Predicted Score: Mallorca 2-3 Girona
