Manchester City have announced the contract extension of Scott Carson. The Cityzens have handed him a new one-year deal, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2025.
The 38-year-old, who joined Manchester City in 2019, will now extend his stay for a sixth season. He has played just twice for the club and has been often on the bench when one of two first-choice goalkeepers were unavailable.
Speaking to the club’s website after penning a new deal, Carson said:
“I’m looking forward to another season as part of this incredible squad at City. Every day I work hard and learn something new from Pep, Xabi Mancisidor and the world class group of players. Hopefully I can continue to help our goalkeepers perform at their best as we challenge for even more trophies.”
Manchester City’s Director of Football Txiki Begiristain also commented on the extension and claimed that Carson was an important part of the club’s success. He said:
“Scott has been important to our successes over recent seasons, supporting his team-mates and training hard as part of our excellent goalkeeping unit. We’re very pleased he has agreed to extend his contract. Hopefully he can help the squad and be ready when called upon on the pitch in the 2024/25 season.”
Scott Carson’s last game for Manchester City was in the 0-0 draw to Sporting CP in December 2022. He has played the full 90 minutes just once and that was a 4-3 win over Newcastle United in May 2021.
Pep Guardiola on Scott Carson’s importance at Manchester City
Pep Guardiola commented on the importance of Scott Carson at Manchester City and claimed that the goalkeeper was needed in training sessions and the locker room. He stated that the 38-year-old is someone everyone in the squad listens to and said ahead of the FA Cup:
“We spoke this morning. He deserves it. He is a guy when he talks everybody listens. He helps take quality training sessions, especially after a game. We have him in the locker room and with the staff you cannot believe the impact, we are very pleased to have him.”
Manchester City could be in the market this summer for a new goalkeeper, as Fabrizio Romano has stated that Ederson could be leaving. He reported that the Brazilian has interest from the Saudi Pro League and could make the jump.
