England manager Gareth Southgate has announced the final 26-man squad that will be traveling to Germany for Euro 2024. Southgate initially released a 33-man preliminary squad for the international friendlies and was expected to trim it down to the final 26 by June 7th, 2024.
Manchester United’s Harry Maguire was not included in the final 26-man list as the 31-year-old defender hasn’t fully recovered from his calf injury. Maguire has been one of the pivotal players for Southgate over the last three major tournaments, even though the defender experienced an inconsistent run of form in a few seasons for Man United.
The former Man United skipper sustained a calf injury in April which kept him out of the FA Cup finals against Manchester City last month. Maguire revealed that he’s absolutely gutted after missing out on the Euros squad.
“I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer.
“Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it. Simply, I am absolutely gutted.
“For me, representing England is the highest honour. It means everything to me. If I can’t help the team as a player, I will support them as a fan – along with the rest of the country. Go and win it boys.”
