Man United will begin their 2024-25 Europa League campaign by hosting FC Twente at Old Trafford on Wednesday. It will be their first introduction to the new league stage in the UEFA competitions, which will see teams play against eight different opponents in the league stage.

Man United have had an inconsistent start to the season so far. They beat Fulham in their opener but lost against Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool. They then beat Southampton in the league and Barnsley in the EFL Cup but played out a goalless draw against Crystal Palace.

Twente, meanwhile, had a tough start to the season as they failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, losing on penalties in a two-legged tie against Red Bull Salzburg. In the Eredivisie, though, they have won three, drawn two, and lost one of their games so far.

It will likely be a tight tussle between the two sides in the Europa League at Old Trafford.

Man United are without Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, and Victor Lindelof due to their respective injuries. All four of them are yet to make an appearance this season. New signing Yoro featured in one pre-season game. Malacia, meanwhile, last played for the club in the 2022-23 season.

Twente Team News

The Dutch side, meanwhile, are without winger Younes Taha, who is expected to remain out with a broken leg until February next year. Midfielder Michal Sadilek is also a doubt for the clash due to a leg injury.

Key Players to watch in Man United vs Twente

Marcus Rashford

The English forward came under immense scrutiny last season as he registered just eight goals and six assists in 43 games across competitions. He started this season poorly as well with no goal contribution in the first four games.

However, Marcus Rashford has regained some of his form in the last three games. He scored one goal against newly promoted Southampton and recorded two goals and one assist against League One side Barnsley. He came off the bench against Crystal Palace and couldn’t do much but he will be keen to not let his momentum drop soon. He will look to help Man United get a good start in their European campaign.

Sem Steijn

Sem Steijn has been phenomenal for Twente since the start of the last season. He scored 17 goals and provided three assists in 34 Eredivisie games last season. He’s already scored six goals and contributed one assist in six league games this season.

Steijn is Twente’s top scorer in the league this season and for reference, the second top scorer, Sam Lammers, has three goals. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder will be keen to make a mark against Man United. Overall, he’s scored 32 goals and provided six assists in 84 games across competitions.

Man United vs Twente Prediction

Given Man United’s inconsistency, it’s hard to predict how they will fare. However, they have put in largely good performances in their last 3 games against Southampton, Barnsley, and Crystal Palace. They were rather unlucky to not take all three points against the Eagles.

With games coming in thick and fast, Erik ten Hag could make many rotations. This could give Twente a benefit as they will also look to continue their three-game unbeaten streak. They’ve won their last two games and hammered Almere City FC 5-0 away in their last game.

With both sides looking to gain the edge, it could be an entertaining but tight affair. Man United should come out on top due to their squad.
