Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte deal hits a snag: No debut this weekend

Manchester United fans will have to wait a bit longer to see new signing Manuel Ugarte in action. The club missed the registration deadline meaning Ugarte won’t feature in this weekend’s matches.

The cutoff to register new players was midday on Friday and United failed to finalize Ugarte’s deal before the deadline.

Ugarte transfer details and Ten Hag’s priorities

Ugarte, who completed his medical with United and was set to join the club after a deal was reached with Paris Saint-Germain will now miss out on his anticipated debut. The transfer valued at £42 million plus £8 million in add-ons was a last-minute adjustment from PSG’s initial demands. Ugarte’s move was delayed partly due to his disrupted pre-season following Uruguay’s Copa America campaign.

Manager Erik ten Hag had prioritized strengthening his midfield this summer, alongside adding a new striker and defensive cover. Ugarte is set to join a list of major summer signings including Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui.

Meanwhile, Scott McTominay is departing Manchester for Napoli in a £25 million deal. Thus, Man United will likely miss a good dack of players for the weekend’s Premier League clash against Liverpool.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will once again face a familiar defensive crisis in United’s third game of the 2024/25 campaign.

Summer signing Leny Yoro will remain out for three months with a foot injury, whereas Tyrell Malacia, Rasmus Hojlund, Victor Lindelof, and Luke Shaw all remain sidelined with their respective injuries. Matthijs de Ligt is expected to make his first start for the Red Devils and as we talked above Ugarte would also be unable to join the Man Utd squad this weekend.
