Despite spending over €200 million over the summer on several new stars, Manchester United have struggled to find their footing across all competitions. So much so, that the Red Devils finished bottom of their group in the Champions League and currently sit in seventh place on the league table. Not quite the season many expected Erik ten Hag to have with rumours that he could be sacked echoing around Old Trafford.
However, that hasn’t stopped the club from being linked with new stars as many believe that the Red Devils need an influx of new talent to help turn their luck around. That especially includes a new forward despite the €60 plus million outlay on Rasmus Hojlund over the summer. The Dane has struggled to find a consistent run of form but is still the club’s top scorer with six games left.
Manchester United Transfer News: Ivan Toney considered an option in the forward line
That hasn’t stopped the rumour mill though as the Mirror has reported that the Red Devils have joined the race for Ivan Toney. The Brentford striker spent the first six odd months of the season suspended after betting allegations but has made a decent return to the game. But the fact that he has only 12 months left on his current contract has seen him linked with a move away.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea have long been considered front-runners for the forward but Brentford’s former €90 million price-tag has put them off. That has now changed as the report has indicated that the Bees would be willing to settle for around €50 million for the 28-year-old. It has attracted Manchester United’s attention who are looking for a striker to provide Hojlund with competition.
Antony Martial currently occupies that role but the Frenchman has scored just the one goal despite making 13 appearances this season. Yet, rumours indicate that the forward is consider his future away from Old Trafford which is why the Red Devils are looking at other options. The Mirror has further reported that Toney is at the top of Matt Hargreaves’ list, with him overseeing United’s plan for the summer window.
