Liverpool suffer injury blow to Diogo Jota & Co in Brentford win

Liverpool produced a statement 4-1 win on Saturday (Feb 17) against Brentford as the leaders maintained their top spot in the Premier League standings. The contest played at the Gtech Community Stadium in West London saw Jurgen Klopp’s side in empathic form but was dealt with a bitter-sweet taste after star names went injured. While Mohamed Salah’s return was positive news for the Reds, injuries to Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones, and Darwin Nunez were the dark clouds for the visitors as they now await the updates.

Diogo Jota injury update

Considered by many as the next big influential player in the Liverpool camp after Salah, Jota’s injury was a real blow for the Reds with the League Cup final taking place in a week. The Portuguese international reportedly injured his knee and will be a big worry. The Anfield faithful are awaiting an update on their star man with a busy period ahead in the coming days.

According to Klopp, “Diogo Jota has knee issue, ruled out — with him it will take more than a month to have him back available.” So far this campaign Jota has scored nine goals and is the joint second-highest scorer for the side after Salah in the Premier League. He has also assisted three goals, taking his tally of goal contributions to 12 for the Premier League season.

It is expected that Liverpool could release an injury update after the scans on Sunday with the player likely to miss at least the upcoming two games.

Other names on the injury list include Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez with the former getting stretched off with an ankle issue. Jones is an important member of the Liverpool midfield, often deputizing for other big-name players. His injury does look good and he could be out of action for a long time. Both Jones and Jota were subbed off for the first time during the one-sided win in West London.

Nunez, another player impacted with crucial goals this season was taken off at halftime when Cody Gakpo came on in his place. It is expected that Nunez’s issue was a precaution and could be available for next week’s Chelsea game. The Reds already have Trent Alexander-Arnold out with an injury and with the return of Europa League and FA Cup advancements, Klopp has big thinking to do in the final few weeks of his Liverpool tenure.

As things stand, Liverpool are two points clear of second-place Arsenal after they registered another big win against Burnley on Saturday. Champions Manchester City dropped points at home when Chelsea held them to a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium.
