Man City and Arsenal Rise in Premier League Standings; Liverpool Maintains Top Spot | GW 27

The business end of the season is approaching the English Premier League and all clubs are trying their best to move up the standings in an attempt to finish in the best position. Liverpool, Man City, and Arsenal continued in top form in Gameweek 27 and continue to be at each other’s throats as each attempts to clinch the glory of English Champions. Gameweek 27 was doused in drama, big wins, and controversy as usual so here are some key highlights of gameweek 27 and the latest Premier League standings

Liverpool sealed a victory late into injury time to stay atop the Premier League, while Arsenal trashed Sheffield United!

Liverpool are making it a habit of winning in the dying embers of the game. After winning the Carabao Cup against Chelsea in extra time last week, Liverpool traveled to Forest’s City Ground. Despite dominating proceedings from the get-go, the injury-riddled Reds couldn’t break through the rigid Forest defense.

However, a sensational finish from Darwin Nunez in the 90+9’ minute secured three crucial points late into injury time for Liverpool. The victory away from home ensured the Reds remained top of the table with 63 points. Liverpool will be back in action on Sunday when they take on Man City in a battle where a loss for either side could be detrimental to their aspirations of winning the English Premier League. 

Meanwhile, third-placed Arsenal continued their demolition drive away from home. The victims this time were bottom-placed Sheffield United. The brutal loss at Bramall Lane summed up Sheffield’s season as they are favorites to be relegated. Arsenal rode to a 6-0 victory and continued their scoring streak.

The Gunners have now scored a whopping 31 goals in their last 7 outings in the league. In context, that is more goals than Sheffield United has scored all season! The win ensured Arsenal remained in the title race, only two points of Liverpool in third place. If Arsenal manages to win their fixture against Brentford next weekend as Liverpool and City take on each other, they could effectively even be first at the end of matchweek 28!

Man City tame Man United again in the derby, while Tottenham secure important victory against Crystal Palace

In what was perhaps deja vu for Man United as Man City tamed the Red Devils yet again. Despite starting stronger than City and scoring in the first ten minutes, United couldn’t hold the aggressive Manchester City. The Citizens kept pressing after Rashford’s goal and were unfortunate to end the first half without scoring. However, in the second half a brilliant showing from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland secured a victory for City.

The game ended 3-1 in Man City’s favor and Man United was lucky to escape without conceding more. The victory further dented the Red Devils’ aspirations of finishing in a top-four spot. Man United are now 11 points behind 4th placed Aston Villa. Meanwhile, the victory for City took them to a tally of 62 points. They retained their spot in 2nd place, a point behind Liverpool who they face on Sunday in gameweek 28.

Elsewhere, Tottenham took on Crystal Palace in a match where securing three points was of paramount importance for Spurs. After a mundane hour of football, Crystal Palace stunned Spurs with a goal around the hour mark. However, Tottenham didn’t panic and kept looking for an opening. Once Timo Werner equalized for Tottenham in the 77th minute, the floodgates opened.

Spurs scored two more goals in quick succession to finish the game 3-1. The three points keeps them in the hunt to finish in the top 4. Tottenham are five points behind 4th placed Aston Villa who they face next weekend and have a game in hand. A victory against Villa could boost their hopes of securing Champions League football.

Premier League Relegation Talk: 

As exciting as the fixtures at the top of the table have been, let’s take a look at the brewing battle at the bottom of the Premier League as teams desperately attempt to move up the standings and avoid relegation.

Luton Town bite the dust yet again as Aston Villa emerge victorious, while Everton drop crucial points at home

Luton Town can’t seem to catch a break and fell to their fourth loss in succession in gameweek 27. Faced with the mighty Villa, they gave their all and just fell a little short. Two early goals from Ollie Watkins didn’t deter Luton who kept pushing and even managed to equalize in the second half in a great six-minute period. However, a late winning goal from ex-Barcelona man, Lucas Digne, spelled another loss for Luton. Luton now are in serious trouble of being relegated as they lost yet again. Luton sits in 18th place with 20 points. However, they will be encouraged by the fact that Nottingham Forest lost their fixture against Liverpool and the distance between the two clubs remains only four points. 

Meanwhile, Everton took the lead against West Ham at home and looked on course to further distancing themselves from the relegation zone. However, an insane comeback from West Ham ensured that Everton remained only five points above the drop zone. 

Elsewhere, Brentford, currently in 15th place, gained a crucial point against Chelsea as they drew 2-2. The point helped them increase the distance between them and the drop zone to six points. 

Sheffield United and Burnley continued their shambolic campaign with yet another loss in gameweek 27. Both clubs have accumulated only 13 points this season and are 11 points away from safety. They remain the favorites to be relegated, while Luton Town, Forest, Everton and Brentford attempt to escape being the third club to be relegated at the end of the season.
