PSV vs Borussia Dortmund Match Preview

The Champions League Round of 16 will serve as a building platform for German giants Borussia Dortmund as they start their knockout stage adventure on Tuesday (Feb 20). The Edin Terzic’s side will face Dutch powerhouse PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands in the first leg of the crucial Champions League contest. The meeting on Tuesday will also be the first competitive outing between the sides as they search for an advantage in the pursuit of a place in the quarterfinal of the Champions League.

Dortmund made their way into the Champions League knockout stage as the winners of Group F where they were locked with AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Newcastle United. Dortmund lost only one of their six matches and recorded impressive wins on their way to the Round of 16. Their only worry will be the domestic form and could need European glory to reach the Champions League next season as they finding it tough to nail down a place in the top four of the Bundesliga.

PSV on the flip side also had a tough group to contain but were the second best behind Arsenal to march to the knockout stage of the Champions League. Despite only two points from their opening three matches, the Dutch giants made sure they finished runners-up ahead of Sevilla and Lens in the group stage.

Team News

On Tuesday night, PSV will line up in their typical 4-3-3 formation, led by free-scoring captain Luuk de Jong. PSV will be boosted by the addition of Richard Ledezma, Jaden De Guzman, and CJ Egan-Riley to his Champions League roster since the group stage. Johan Bakayoko has been used on the right flank for the hosts. This season, PSV players in the Champions League have completed the most dribbles and created the most opportunities (15 each).

Jadon Sancho and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, two English players, as well as Ian Maatsen—who went through PSV’s development system before joining Chelsea, have bolstered Dortmund’s roster. While Ramy Bensebaini (sickness), Karim Adeyemi (muscular), and Felix Nmecha (hip) are not available, all three should play at some point in Eindhoven.

Considering Dortmund’s European form the visitors could be a handy customer to take on, however, the same could not be said for their domestic form. PSV on the other hand will look to stop Dortmund who won their group ahead of AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.
