After falling to a 2-0 loss away from home in the first leg of the UCL R.O.16 at Parc des Princes against PSG, Real Sociedad are all set to host the Parisians in the second leg of the tie. La Real as they are affectionately called in Spain played their hearts out in France, but couldn’t score at PSG’s home. Their recent inability to score has been consistent even in the league. The Basque side has scored only 3 goals in their last 8 outings, a shocking return for a team so fluid in attack. While the creative intent has continued to be evident, their struggles in front of goal have led to losing many fixtures in 2024. At home, in the midst of their fans, they will look to finally wiggle out of their hole and score against PSG. 

Meanwhile, a triumphant PSG visit Spain to seal their progress to the next round in the UCL after victory in the first leg over Real Sociedad. Ever since Luis Enrique took over the PSG project, the Parisians have played some of their best football. In France, the club led by Kylian Mbappe is comfortably leading the league and has created a gulf of 12 points between them and second placed Brest. While Monaco held them to a 0-0 draw last night, the attacking intent of PSG was beautiful to watch. They will look to build on this form and secure their spot in the quarter-finals of the UCL.

Real Sociedad:

La Real continued their bad form as they were knocked out of the Copa del Rey semi-finals by Mallorca. A lot of their recent worries have arisen due players being fatigued due to lack of rotation. The lack of rotation has been caused by several injuries in the squad. On Tuesday night, Sociedad will be without the services of winger Martin Merquelanz who sustained a knee injury recently. La Real will also be without striker Carlos Fernandez who has been sidelined with a knee injury as well. 

However, the biggest blow to Real Sociedad comes in the form of Ander Barrenetxea. The youngster has been in sensational form this campaign and suffered a brutal muscle injury in training yesterday. He is now unlikely to wear the Sociedad jersey at least until the end of March. Unfortunate. 

PSG: 

While the Parisians have been in sensational form, they also are carrying the baggage of injuries. First choice center-back Kimpembe suffered an achilles tendon injury last season and is facing a long time on the sidelines. While Milan Skiniar was signed to aid captain Marquinhos in the center, he sustained an injury in January as well and will remain on the sidelines for the game against  Sociedad. Marquinhos is also struggling to recover from his knock and might miss the tie. However, PSG seems positive at the moment. 

Portuguese Danilo Pereira is also unlikely to return to the side given the thigh injury he sustained recently. If Marquinhos doesn’t recover in time, PSG will be forced to play the tie with none of their first-choice center-backs.
