Robert Sanchez to stay at Chelsea despite transfer reports

Despite signing for Chelsea in the summer of 2023, Robert Sánchez failed to make an impact under Mauricio Pochettino with injuries and illness playing a role. The Spaniard missed 27 games in total through various injuries and illnesses but was also second favourite to former manager Mauricio Pochettino. That was especially after a string of poor performances with Pochettino preferring Petrovic towards the end of the season.

The 24-year-old did well when called upon and reports had indicated that the Blues were set to sell Robert Sánchez because of that. However, the tone has now changed after Pochettino left the Blues with Enzo Maresca appointed as his replacement. But reports indicated that the former Leicester City boss was looking at other options as he didn’t really like Sanchez as a number 1 goalkeeper.

Robert Sánchez to stay at Chelsea despite reports indicating otherwise

However, Fabrizio Romano has now reported otherwise as the transfer expert has revealed that the new Chelsea boss loves Robert Sánchez and is looking forward to working with him. So much so, that Maresca has convinced the Chelsea board to keep the 26-year-old at the club and not sell him. The club have reportedly agreed to that and expect the Spaniard to remain at Stamford Bridge for now.

Romano has also reported that Ben Roberts, now Head of Global Goalkeeping, played a key role in convincing the board that Sánchez still has a lot to offer. The Blues didn’t really see the best of the former Brighton star, who had thrived at his previous side. That combined with Sanchez’s injury issues and Pochettino’s preference for another option saw Sanchez get limited game time.
