Robin Gosens explains how he was heartbroken after missing out on the Euro 2024 Germany squad
There are many notable absentees from Nagelsmann’s 27-man preliminary squad. Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka are some of the surprising names.
But Robin Gosens who transferred to Union Berline last summer was left heartbroken when his name was not included in the Euro 2024 squad. The 29-year-old versatile player who can play as both a midfielder and left winger was part of Germany’s last Euros squad.
Julian Nagelsmann explained that Union Berlin’s disastrous campaign which saw them finish just above the relegation zone resulted in Gosens’ omission from the Germany Euro 2024 squad.
Gosens said: “It felt like s**t.
“He [Nagelsmann] called me and said: ‘Robin, I’m really sorry, but I can’t take you with me. I really appreciate you, but unfortunately Union’s season is blowing up in your face.’
“When you subordinate everything to it, when it’s an absolute childhood dream that then just disappears into thin air… to have that certainty, it pulls everything out from under you.
“Then we hung up and I cried for myself. Then I called my wife and said, ‘Honey, I didn’t make it.’
Gosens has earned 20 caps for the national side and scored two goals. This season he tallied seven goals and four assists in 37 games for Union this season.
