Robin Le Normand faces severe brain injury, Atletico de Madrid assures to abide by guidelines

Spanish top-tier giants Atletico Madrid took to their official social media handles to provide a formal statement on centre-back Robin Le Normand’s injury and the signs are not good. The 27-year-old defender has suffered a “traumatic brain injury” (TBI) with subdural hematoma, and his date of return from the severe injury is not known.

Le Normand was guarding the Atletico de Madrid back-line during the “Madrid Derby”, against arch-rivals Real Madrid in their last La Liga game. During the game, Le Normand collided with Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni. The defender was immediately given medical attention on the sidelines and was allowed to continue the game.

Later, soon the final whistle blew in the highly dramatic high-voltage 1-1 draw, and Robin was sent for further scans. Now, the scan reports are out and his club has issued a statement providing a valuable update on the situation. Atletico Madrid have clearly mentioned that they will abide by the “guidelines envisaged in the protocol established for these types of injuries” (TBI).

The statement is enough to state that the Diego Simeone-coached side is in no hurry to rush the player back to play, and instead they wish to ensure full safety. The traumatic brain injury is a big blow for the player, as the return date cannot be confirmed, but can be predicted to be scheduled after a very long time. Robin Le Normand needs to receive the best medical care to ensure a safe and fast comeback.

Impact on Atletico Madrid

Robin Le Normand joined the Spanish stalwarts this summer transfer window from Real Sociedad for a mammoth transfer fee of 34.50 million Euros. His contribution since his arrival has been immense for the Diego Simeone-guided side. He played in 7 La Liga and one UEFA Champions League games already.

Fitting into his shoes will be a challenge for any of the full-backs present in the team. There are many defenders who will be fighting for the spot, César Azpilicueta and Clément Lenglet will look for a permanent place after the incident.
