Sassuolo dealt with blow as Serie A relegation looms for the struggling Italian side

On Friday evening, relegation candidates Sassuolo desperately wanted to secure three points against Serie B-bound Salernitana who are languishing at the bottom of the table with 15 points after 31 games.

Sassuolo took the lead with goals from Albanian winger Nedim Bajrami and Armand Laurienté in the first 45 minutes of the game before Salernitana’s Antonio Candreva found the back of the net in the 52nd with a spot kick.

It looked like Sassuolo would take the deserving three points and move out of the drop zone but Giulio Maggiore’s equaliser in stoppage time gave Salernitana their 15th point of the season and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

How have Sassuolo and Salernitana performed this season?

Salernitana have been disastrous in the Serie A this season, finding themselves at the bottom end of the table with just 15 points on the board after 31 games. With just seven matches left to play, Salernitana are almost certain of demoting to the second division of Italian football, Serie B next season.

They are now sitting 10 points behind 19th spot and 11 adrift of safety in Serie A. The result marked an unhappy second game for Salernitana coach Stefano Colantuono, Salernitana’s fourth coach of the ongoing campaign.

Sassuolo have also been dreadful this season and is still at risk of slipping down to Serie B in the final weeks of the Serie A campaign. From their last 31 games, the I Neroverdi have only earned 24 points and lost one game in the last four.

They will be aiming to leap out of the bottom three and give their survival hopes a better chance in the remaining seven games of the Serie A campaign.
