Scotland vs Switzerland will be the second round of Group A fixtures, with this game scheduled to be played at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne on June 19.

The Scots will enter this game on the back of a crushing 5-1 defeat against hosts Germany in the first game. They were 1-0 down inside 10 minutes and went into the break three goals down. Ryan Porteous was sent off in the second half as Germany added two more goals, with Antonio Rudiger’s own goal proving to be a consolation for the Scots. They will look to put that behind them and perform well in the next one.

The Swiss, on the other hand, made light work of Hungary as they brushed them aside with a 3-1 scoreline. Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer’s first-half goals put Switzerland in a commanding position before Barnabas Varga’s goal gave Hungary a fighting chance. However, Breel Embolo scored in the 93rd minute to put the result beyond doubt and they will look to carry that momentum into the next game.

Manager Steve Clarke came under tremendous pressure in the last game as Germany looked relentless in their efforts to defeat Scotland. He fielded a slightly defensive-minded starting XI in that game and was duly punished despite using five substitutes as well.

All of the players will be fit and available for selection for the next one, except Porteous, who received a straight red card, and hence a one-match suspension.

Manager Murat Yakin will be pleased with his players after they showed spirit and dug deep to secure a confidence-boosting win against Hungary in the opening match. He will look to maintain the same combination of players as all of them are available.

  • Andrew Robertson (Scotland) – The Scottish captain will look to rally his troops and bring his team together as they gear up for a crucial fixture. Nerves will be high and a lot will be at stake if Scotland loses this, they will be as good as eliminated from the competition.
  • Breel Embolo (Switzerland) – He was on target in the last game as he grabbed a late insurance goal to help calm himself and his teammates as they secured a 3-1 win. Despite not starting that game, he came on after 74 minutes and looked sharp and eager to be involved in every play. That performance may as well have earned him a start in the next game.

Head-to-Head Record

These two sides have faced off just once in the past, with that meeting coming way back in the 1996 edition of the Euro. Scotland secured a 1-0 win against Switzerland in that group-stage match courtesy of Ally McCoist’s first-half strike.

Since there is little history to go by, there is no pattern of results between these two sides. However, just going by their performances in the last game, the Swiss are in a much stronger position as compared to the Scots, who need to regroup with urgency after conceding five goals.
