Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon completes Brentford Loan Move to Bolster Bees’ Defensive Options

Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon is poised to join Brentford on loan until the conclusion of the current season, according to sources from the PA news agency.

The move comes in response to Brentford’s pressing need for full-back options, with their primary left-back Rico Henry sidelined for the remainder of the campaign due to a knee injury.

Reguilon, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Manchester United, making 12 appearances, will provide valuable experience to Brentford’s defensive lineup.

Bees’ manager Thomas Frank has grappled with alternative solutions, deploying Aaron Hickey and even attacker Saman Ghoddos out wide, along with experimenting with a 3-5-2 formation.

The loan move signifies Reguilon’s return to the Tottenham fold after Manchester United activated a break clause in the initial loan deal this month. With stiff competition in the left-back position under Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, another temporary move for Reguilon was anticipated.

Brentford secured Reguilon on a straight loan deal with no option or obligation to make the transfer permanent, according to sources. The one-time Spanish international could make his debut for Brentford in the upcoming Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Despite Tottenham’s €30 million investment in Reguilon from Real Madrid in September 2020, the left-back has yet to find a consistent place in either his native Spain or England.

Loaned to Atletico Madrid last season, his time at Manchester United this season did not result in a permanent spot, prompting his return to Tottenham.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Brentford’s deal to sign Reguilon is expected to be completed without an option to buy. Tottenham, meanwhile, has not yet reaped the expected sporting rewards from their substantial investment, and the loan move to Brentford provides an opportunity for Reguilon to showcase his capabilities in the Premier League.

As the Spanish defender undergoes a medical on Wednesday, the move could bolster Brentford’s defensive resilience in their quest to improve on recent back-to-back defeats in the Premier League.
