Top 5 goalkeepers to pick for Fantasy Premier League 2024/25 Gameweek 2

Fantasy Premier League or FPL returned with a bang last weekend, as the 2024/25 season began. As we enter Gameweek 2, let us look at some goalkeepers who you should have in your team this week.

First let us look at last week’s results and the fixtures for this week. Manchester United secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Fulham, while Liverpool cruised to a 2-0 win over Ipswich Town. Brighton enjoyed a dominant performance, defeating Everton 3-0. Arsenal and Newcastle also started their campaigns with wins over Wolves and Southampton, respectively. There were draws between Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth, West Ham and Aston Villa, Leicester and Tottenham, and Brentford and Crystal Palace. However, Manchester City made a statement with a convincing 2-0 win over Chelsea.

Coming on to this weekend, the action continues. On Saturday, Brighton will host Manchester United, while Tottenham will face Everton. Crystal Palace will take on West Ham United, and Southampton will battle Nottingham Forest. Fulham will clash with Leicester City, and Manchester City will look to build on their strong start against Ipswich Town. Aston Villa will also aim for a victory against Arsenal. On Sunday, Wolverhampton Wanderers will host Chelsea, Bournemouth will face Newcastle United, and Liverpool will take on Brentford.

#1 Ederson

Ederson has come in at the same price in FPL as last season i.e. £5.5m. What Ederson does have in his favour though, is that he plays for one of the best defences in the league and is the most likely of their defensive players to start, given Pep Guardiola’s liking for rotating his players. City conceded 34 goals last season and only Arsenal conceded less. City have Ipswich which almost means a certain clean sheet for Ederson. He is owned by 8.1% of the people.

#2 Alisson

Alisson is worth his weight in gold in FPL because he is the best keeper in the league and plays for one of the best defences in the league. Liverpool conceded 41 goals last season, the third least of all clubs. Liverpool player Brentford this week who are still unresolved over the status of their main striker Ivan Toney so a clean sheet is on the cards. The £5.5m priced Brazilian picked up 7 points in the opening game and has an ownership of 10%.

#3 Guglielmo Vicario

Guglielmo Vicario is a very solid goalkeeper option at £5.0m. Tottenham aren’t the most reliable defensively, and that showed in their opening game against Leicester City. He only averaged 2.9 points last year though, which is a concern. In the game against the Foxes, he had 2 points. Spurs though face Everton this weekend, who are rather timid in attack. The Italian who is owned by 4.1% of the managers will hope for a clean sheet.

#4 Matz Sels

The goalkeeper for Nottingham Forest, Matz Sels could be considered a niche pick in FPL. While his team’s defensive record may not always be consistent, Sels’s ability to earn clean sheets and occasionally save penalties can provide valuable points. This weekend in particular, Sels could be a valuable differential as Forest are up against newly promoted Southampton. He had 3 points last gameweek against Bournemouth. Available for £4.5m, Sels is owned by just 1.2% of the people.

#5 Alphonse Areola

Areola was one of the most popular goalkeepers in the game last season, largely thanks to his £4.0m starting price. The Frenchman has been given a price rise to £4.5m in 2024/25, in recognition of his likely status as the clear number one. Areola was the sixth highest scoring goalkeeper, managing 116 points. West Ham play Crystal Palace this weekend, who were poor in their opening game. Although he didn’t manage more than 1 point in the opening game, Aston Villa are a stronger opponent.
