With the group stage matches of the UEFA Euro 2024 finished, the golden boot race of the tournament has become interesting. Georgia’s Georges Mikautadze has secured the top spot in the most goals scored so far in the competition, after he scored a crucial goal against Portugal in his team’s final fixture of Group F. His goal made sure that the 2016 champions were handed an alarming result in the form of a loss.
Earlier in group A, Germany’s Niclas Fullkrug scored an important equalizer against Switzerland climbed the goal tally and sat alongside his teammate Jamal Musiala, who already has two goals to his name.
Cody Gakpo added another goal to his name when Netherlands lost 2-3 to Austria in their final group D contest. The Liverpool forward is also very much in the Euro 2024 Golden Boot race with two goals.
The most interesting group of this edition’s European Championship has been group E, and it has delivered two surprising names in this golden boot race in the forms of Romania’s Razvan Marin and Slovakia’s Ivan Schranz. Marin found his second goal of the tournament from a penalty against Slovakia last night and helped his team progress into the round of 16.
This year’s European Championship has been one of the most eventful football tournaments ever. In the group stage alone, fifty-eight players have scored one goal each, and seven own goals have been scored so far. For the first time in the history of the UEFA Euro, the own goals are the frontrunners to top the list of the most goals scored. Surprisingly, all these goals have been scored by different players.
Euro 2024 Golden Boot Standings
5. Jamal Musiala (Germany)
The Bayern Munich superstar lit up the curtain raiser of the Euro 2024 against Scotland and registered his first goal of the tournament through a close-range finish. He continued his goalscoring form and netted the opener for Germany against Hungary in the very next match. The young attacker is one of the favorites to win the Golden Boot this term.
4. Razvan Marin (Romania)
Romania’s journey into the round of 16 of Euro 2024 has been like a fairy-tale and Razvan Marin is one of the scriptwriters of that story. The Serie A midfielder took the chance from a loose ball and defeated the Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin with a hard and low-accurate shot.
Later, his penalty goal against Slovakia in the final group fixture earned his team a round-of-16 ticket and took him to the list of the most goals scored in the European Championship.
3. Cody Gakpo (Netherlands)
The versatile Liverpool forward opened his Euro 2024 scoring through a deflected shot that went past a hapless Polish goalkeeper to level the terms for Holland.
Against Austria, he put Netherlands ahead with a beautiful finish, which was not enough to earn a victory for the Orange army. However, Gakpo will be instrumental for his nation in the round of 16 as he will also have a hunger to clinch the Golden Boot by depending on his goal-scoring prowess. Gakpo has become the most influential figure in this Netherlands group.
2. Niclas Fullkrug (Germany)
Following an impressive season at Borussia Dortmund, Niclas Fullkrug continued his fine run of form here in the European Championship as well. The 31-year-old came off the bench against Scotland replacing Kai Havertz in the opening game of the tournament. It took him only a few minutes to find the back of the net through an absolute screamer.
In the final group stage contest, when Germany were desperate to penetrate a strong Swiss defense, it was Fullkrug who rose highest to connect a beautiful cross and send it past a standing Yann Sommer. His agility, awareness, and scoring skills have propelled him to the second spot on the Golden Boot standings with 2 goals to his name.
1. Georges Mikautadze (Georgia)
Just like his nation’s presence in the Euro 2024 round of 16, Georges Mikautadze is also a surprising name in the Golden Boot race. The Georgian attacker tops the goal-scoring tally with three goals. He scored his team’s only goal against Turkey in the 32nd minute when he slotted home after an orchestrated build-up play.
Against the Czech Republic, he broke the deadlock with a first-half penalty goal. He continued his fine scoring form and ended the group stage on a flying note, thanks to another goal from the spot against Portugal. He is also the only player in this tournament to score in every single match so far. Now, as Georgia have advanced and booked a round of 16 fixtures, Mikautadze has a great chance to go all the way to lift the Euro 2024 Golden Boot Award.
