Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United to build a squad around Bruno Fernandes. He believes that the Portuguese is the only senior player worth keeping in the squad.
The Red Devils legend was talking on Sky Sports when he stated that the rebuild was necessary at the club. He stated that the need this summer is a massive clearout but admitted that things cannot be done in one year.
He added that Onana, Dalot and Maguire have done well in a few games this season, but not good enough to compete with Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City. He said:
“You have to build the team around Bruno. He’s quality and has got fight in him, and then I think all the other players, get rid of them. I think you keep the young players, and you keep Bruno. I think it has to be a massive clear out. It has to be. It’s not going to be in one year, but I think it’s going to be in the next couple of years… I think [Andre Onana] has had a shaky start but has got better and better over the year. For me, [Diogo] Dalot’s done well, [Harry] Maguire has had an in-and-out season. To compete in this league they need better players. Don’t get me wrong, these players are good players. But to compete with Man City, Liverpool, and Arsenal, they need better players.”
Manchester United are 8th in the Premier League this season and can only move up one position on the final day of the season. However, they would need to beat Brighton & Hove Albion, while also hoping that Newcastle United drop points to Brentford.
Bruno Fernandes unsure about Manchester United future
Bruno Fernandes has admitted that he is unsure about his future at Manchester United. The club captain wants to stay, but has put the ball in teh club’s court and stated that he needs to be asked to stay.
Speaking after the 3-2 win over Newcastle United, he said:
“I will be here till when the club wants me and the club wants me to be a part of the future. If for some reason they don’t want me, then I will go.”
Erik ten Hag also commented on the midfielder’s future and said:
“The club wants to keep Bruno. There is no question I think. I have to see the interview. Maybe your interpretation… but as far as I know and everything I know from him, he loves Manchester United. You see he always gives his best. He’s an example, even with injuries he is playing. He loves football. He wants to win. That is how I describe his character and I am very pleased with his performance, and his performances across the season.”
Manchester United have the FA Cup final against Manchester City later this month.
