Tottenham Hotspur: Why did Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal fight?

Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal were locked in a heated argument during their Liverpool clash

Tottenham Hotspur players Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal were locked in a heated exchange of words during their Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday, so much so that goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario had to intervene.

The Lilywhites were crushed 4-2 by the Reds at Anfield in yet another blow to their Champions League hopes. Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott all scored apiece within the hour mark to give the hosts a four-goal cushion.

Richarlison and Son Heung-min scored within minutes of each other midway through the second half to reduce the deficit, as Spurs looked to make a comeback, but couldn’t find two more goals to complete the turnaround, as Ange Postecoglu’s side lost for the fourth league game in a row.

During the tie, however, tensions flared between teammates, Romero and Emerson, as the defenders were seen locked in an altercation. It must have to do with Emerson’s shortcomings in two of Liverpool’s first-half goals.

Salah sneakily snuck behind him before heading home Liverpool’s opening goal, before Emerson played Robertson onside for their second when Vicario had parried Salah’s initial shot away. When the half-time whistle blew, Romero sparred with Emerson, with Vicario jumping in to separate the pair.

More misery was to follow for Tottenham after the break as Gakpo and Elliott fired in two more goals to essentially put the tie to bed, before Richarlison and Son bagged two consolation goals for the visitors.

Tottenham on a low ebb

Tottenham Hotspur are making an awful finish to their Premier League campaign, one that promised a lot earlier on. Spurs began their season by going their first 10 games unbeaten, winning eight, and it seemed like they could be title challengers. However, the bubble was soon burst, and Ange Postecoglu’s side have blown hot and cold since November.

However, things have taken a turn for the worse lately, with the London outfit losing their last four league matches in a row, including a 4-0 loss to Newcastle United and tonight’s 4-2 defeat to Liverpool. Tottenham had the chance of qualifying for the Champions League, but have now almost blown that up, with Aston Villa holding the advantage. Unless the Villans drop points in their last two games, Spurs winning their remaining three, a top-four finish seems unlikely.
