Why will Bayern not play the DFB Super Cup next season?

Bayern Munich’s series of unfortunate events has not stopped yet. After losing the league title for the first time in 12 years, Bayern will also not take part in the DFL Supercup next season. It is the second time for them to not participate in the season-opening event after the 2011 edition.

Basically, the DFL Supercup contested between the league winner and the DFB Pokal champions in the previous season. With Bayern Leverkusen winning the league, Bayern’s only hope to play in the super cup was by finishing second.

Things have gone off the scripts for Bayern Munich

However, the final game of 2023/24 has gone wrong for Thomas Tuchel’s squad after losing 4-2 to Hoffenheim. That loss allowed VfB Stuttgart to move second after beating Borussia Monchengladbach four goals to nil at home.

Finishing second is not a guarantee for Stuttgart anyway, to face Leverkusen in the super cup. Die Werkself have to beat Kaiserslautern to make way for Stuttgart to the DFL Supercup.

But if it happens otherwise, Xabi Alonso’s squad will have a rematch against Kaiserslautern in the super cup. For Leverkusen, this will be their first super cup in the DFL era. Beforehand, they played the DFB Supercup back in 1993 but lost to Werder Bremen at Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion, which nowadays is known as BayArena.

Finishing third was the Bundesliga outfit’s worst finish since the 2010/11 season when Borussia Dortmund won the league and Leverkusen finished second. This makes Bayern’s executives Max Eberl and Christoph Freund have to work hard in the summer to assemble a better and more proper team to compete for the next season.
