Yann Sommer Early Life
Sommer was born in Basel, Switzerland. He started his youth career with FC Herrliberg for the 1996-97 season. In 1997, he joined Concordia and spent six years with them.
His performances saw FC Basel recruit him to their academy in 2003.
FC Basel
After two years with their youth setup, Yann Sommer signed a professional contract with Basel in 2005. He mainly played for their U21 side and impressed during his time with the side. He then joined Liechtenstein club FC Vaduz on loan in 2007 to gain some experience at the senior level. He spent 1.5 years at the club and helped them earn promotion in his first season.
Sommer then returned to Basel in January 2009. He made his senior debut in a 3-2 defeat against Young Boys in February of that year and went on to make five more appearances that season.
He then joined another Swiss club Grasshoppers on loan for the 2009-10 season. He returned to Basel in 2010 and became the first-choice goalkeeper in the 2011-12 season. During his time with the club, he won four Swiss league titles and one Swiss Cup.
Borussia Monchengladbach
In 2014, German side Borussia Monchengladbach signed Sommer from FC Basel to replace Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who moved to Barcelona. Monchengladbach remained unbeaten for 18 consecutive matches, breaking their own record, and finished their highest-ever third in the Bundesliga in Sommer’s first season at the club.
He made his debut in the DFB-Pokal in a 3-1 win over Homburg. He was eventually named the club’s Player of the Season for the 2014-15 season.
Sommer received plenty of criticism the following season as Monchengladbach suffered under Lucien Favre. The manager resigned during the season after a run of poor results. The club and Sommer saw a big upturn in form after that. The goalkeeper made a record 19 saves in their Bundesliga clash against Bayern Munich in a 1-1 draw in August 2022.
Bayern Munich
In January 2023, Bayern Munich signed Yann Sommer for €8 million to replace an injured Manuel Neuer. Sommer made his debut in the same month in a 1-1 draw against RB Leipzig.

Inter Milan
After just half a season with Bayern, Sommer moved to Inter Milan in the summer of 2023. He helped them win the Serie A title, keeping the highest number of clean sheets. He was also named in the team of the league for the 2023-24 season.
International Career
Yann Sommer represented Switzerland at U16, U17, U19 and U21 levels. He made his U21 debut in a 1-1 draw against Belgium in August 2007. He even captained the U21 side at the U21 Euros in 2011, where they reached the final without conceding a single goal. However, they lost 2-0 in the final against Spain.
Sommer then made his senior debut in 2012 in a 1-0 defeat against Romania in a friendly. He featured for Switzerland at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and became their first-choice keeper moving forward. He featured in every major competition after it before announcing his retirement from international football on August 19, 2024.
