West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta recently opened up about rumors linking him with a potential move to Manchester City. He expressed his respect for the Hammers and stressed that he is currently focused on the remainder of the season.
Man City made an attempt to sign Paqueta
Manchester City attempted to sign Paqueta last summer as well, making a £80 million offer but the move didn’t go through. They are expected to return with an attempt to sign him this summer. When asked about the potential transfer, Paqueta said:
“I have a lot of respect for West Ham. I’ve had a very good season and this has helped me a lot in my evolution in the Premier League. Out of respect for them, I have to remain focused on my work.”
Paqueta is also currently being investigated by the FA for a potential breach of gambling rules. When asked about it, the Brazilian midfielder said:
“It’s been seven months since it’s been happened and I’m co-operating, doing what’s in my power so that it can be resolved.”
The outcome of this investigation could have a big impact on whether Manchester City continues to pursue Paqueta or move away. His contract with the Hammers expires in 2027.
The Cityzens could see Bernardo Silva leave in the summer, with Barcelona and PSG interested. Kalvin Phillips, who is currently on loan at West Ham, is also expected to leave. Hence, Manchester City will look to sign a midfielder, be it Paqueta or someone else.
Manchester City target Lucas Paqueta’s career so far
Paqueta came through Brazilian side Flamengo’s youth setup and spent three years with the senior side before joining AC Milan in January 2019. He made 44 appearances for them, scoring one goal and providing three assists.
The midfielder then joined Olympique Lyon in 2020. He made his name at the French club, performing brilliantly and registering 21 goals and 13 assists in 80 appearances for them.
The 26-year-old then joined West Ham in the summer of 2022. He has made 74 appearances for them so far, scoring 12 goals and contributing 13 assists. Paqueta also helped the Hammers win the UEFA Europa Conference League last season.
The Brazilian has had to deal with some injury issues this season but has contributed seven goals and six assists in 33 games across competitions. He has helped West Ham reach the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals, where they will face Bayer Leverkusen.
