The Champions League is set to resume after the winter break, European heavyweights gather pace to conquer the biggest club competition in the world. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Real Sociedad are set to lock horns for a place in the quarterfinal of this season’s competition. PSG will play the first leg at home having finished group runners-up to Borussia Dortmund in the group of death including AC Milan and Newcastle United. On the flip side, Real will enter the R16 tie as the group winners giving seen-off competition from last season’s runners-up Inter Milan and Benfica.

This will be the first ever meeting between the sides in competitive football with this being a fourth visit to France for Real. In their previous three visits to France, Real have lost two and their solitary win came in August 2013 in a Champions League playoff match. PSG on the flip side will play a Spanish opposition for the 37th time having won 14 times and lost 13 encounters.

PSG will have a strong Playing XI in Wednesday’s match while the likes of Sergio Rico, Milan Skriniar and Presnel Kimpembe remain long-term absentees. PSG won 3-1 on Sunday evening against Lille and won’t have time to recover but are likely to put the same team consisting of Lucas Hernandez, Achraf Hakimi and Warren Zaire-Emery. Kylian Mbappe should lead the line alongside Ousmane Dembélé.

Real Sociedad have injury issues and will be without Arsenal loan star Kieran Tierney, Odriozola, Becker, Munoz and Fernandez. Real lost 1-0 at home on Saturday and will look to bounce back with returning Takefusa Kubo, Umar Sadiq and Ander Barrenetxea in the attacking front.

Prediction

Despite winning the group Real Sociedad will walk in the tie as the underdogs while PSG will be the favourites to win the first leg. Considering the strong presence of Kylian Mbppe and Ousmane Dembélé PSG should rally easily against the Real Sociedad who are seventh in the La Liga.
