Starting from the 2024-25 season, football may introduce a new card – the purple card 🟪 – for players who excessively celebrate beyond a 10-second limit. However, this change has not yet been officially confirmed.
Why there are talks about the Introduction of the Purple Card in Football?
This decision comes as a response to a surge in unsportsmanlike behaviour witnessed both locally and nationally in the sport.
The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has taken the lead in this initiative. Thus, emphasizing the importance of upholding sportsmanship values in interscholastic sports.
According to CIF guidelines, which emphasize respect, responsibility, fairness, and good conduct, the purple card soccer serves as a tool to curb inappropriate behavior among spectators, particularly parents and team officials.
In collaboration with the local referee association, CIF developed the purple card system to address instances of misconduct from the sidelines.
Referees will issue a warning by flashing the football purple card to spectators engaging in inappropriate behavior. If the behavior persists, a second purple card will result in removing the spectator from the game.
A growing amount of misbehavior on the field has led to the addition of a Purple Card by football authorities. This campaign to encourage sportsmanship in school athletics is being spearheaded by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).
How Purple Card Could be Used?
Reflecting on the effectiveness of the purple card in football, girls varsity assistant coach Ken Hammond shared an incident during a recent game.
He recounted, “The parent didn’t like what the referee was calling so he was yelling disrespectful comments at him. The ref finally saw it as too much and gave him a purple card.”
The implementation of the purple card aims to foster a positive environment for players while minimizing distractions and allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the game.
This innovative approach marks a significant step towards addressing misconduct in football. Thus, ensuring that respect and sportsmanship remain at the forefront of the sport’s ethos.
