In a world where footballers often sport intricate tattoos, Cristiano Ronaldo stands out for his unmarked skin. The reason behind his decision is both simple and heartwarming: Ronaldo wants to donate blood as often as possible.
While many of his fellow football stars like Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. proudly display their tattoos, Ronaldo has chosen a different path.
In 2012, he revealed in an interview with the Italian news site Diretta that he refuses to get any tattoos so he can “donate blood more often.”
Why Cristiano Ronaldo Stays Ink-Free?
According to medical guidelines, individuals who get tattoos or skin piercings must wait at least four months before they can donate blood again. By staying ink-free, Ronaldo ensures he can continue his regular blood donations without interruption.
Ronaldo’s commitment to helping others doesn’t stop there. In 2011, his Portuguese national teammate Carlos Martins shared that his young son had been diagnosed with leukaemia and needed regular blood and bone marrow transfusions.

Moved by the situation, Ronaldo became a registered bone marrow donor and has been actively donating ever since.
In a 2013 interview with the Spanish radio station Cadena Cope, Ronaldo explained his decision:
“He told us about the problem with his son and we, the players, showed great unity to help him and his son because we knew it was a very complicated situation. [Donating bone marrow] is something a lot of people think is a difficult thing to do, but it’s nothing more than drawing blood and doesn’t hurt. I did it many years ago and if I had to do it again, I would because this is a very serious disease for many children and we need to help them.”
Ronaldo’s dedication to donating blood and bone marrow has made him the face of a campaign organized by the charity Abbott, aimed at encouraging others to donate as well.
Speaking about the campaign, Ronaldo emphasized the impact that blood donations can have:
“We can all make a difference by donating blood. Each donation can benefit up to three people in emergency situations and for long-term medical treatments. That’s why I am enthusiastic to be partnering with Abbott to bring awareness to the importance of blood donation and to encourage people around the world to become lifelong blood donors and help save lives.”
Ronaldo’s decision to stay tattoo-free may seem like a small choice, but it’s one that reflects his deep commitment to helping others. His story is a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful acts of kindness are the ones that come from the heart.
