Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has stunned the footballing world by announcing his return to international action for Germany.
This comes as a big boost for coach Julian Nagelsmann and Die Mannschaft ahead of Euro 2024.
Toni Kroos announces return to international football
Kroos announced his decision via his Instagram account, where he added a short caption.
“I will play for Germany again from March. Why? Because I was asked by the national coach.
“I’m up for it and I’m sure a lot more is possible with the team at the European Championships than most people believe!”
Toni Kroos announced his retirement from international football back in June 2021. Germany were just eliminated from Euro 2020 after a 2-0 defeat to England and the midfielder believed it was the right time to step away.
A World Cup winner with his country in 2014, Kroos ended up missing the 2022 edition in Qatar. Germany were shockingly eliminated from the Group Stages of the tournament after finishing third behind Japan and Spain in Group E. However, they will be looking to make amends for that failure at the next international tournament – Euro 2024.
Kroos also mentioned that coach Nagelsmann personally reached out to him asking him to return. His presence in the squad will be vital as the 34-year-old comes with heaps of experience at the top level.
Toni Kroos’ record for club and country
The midfielder debuted for Germany back in 2010 and has made 106 appearances since, scoring 17 goals and providing 19 assists. He also has over 700 senior club appearances, with over 200 goal contributions to his name.
Toni Kroos has been a serial winner at club level as well. He is a five-time Champions League winner, a six-time Club World Cup winner, and a three-time league champion with both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
Adding a player with such an illustrious career to their squad would be any coach’s dream. Julian Nagelsmann will be delighted that Kroos obliged to his request.
