Sergio Reguilon, Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon joins Brentford on loan until the end of the season

Tottenham Hotspur full-back Sergio Reguilon has completed his move to Premier League side Brentford on loan until the end of the ongoing season.

This is as per reports from Fabrizio Romano, who has added that there is no buyout clause inserted in the player’s contract, with his return to Tottenham at the end of the season all but finalised.

The player’s medical tests have been scheduled for Wednesday, January 17, with an official announcement to be made if and when the tests are successful.

Sergio Reguilon joined Tottenham from Real Madrid back in 2020 for a fee in the region of £30 million in 2020 but has been unable to establish himself in their first team. He has made just 67 appearances for Spurs, scoring twice and assisting nine goals.

The Spaniard has since been out on two loan spells, first at Atletico Madrid and more recently at Manchester United, in a bid to get more game time. He made 12 appearances each for both the clubs, without making any goal contributions.

However, he has now moved to Brentford with hopes of being a first-team regular rather than a rotational piece.

Sergio Reguilon is a proper attacking full-back who relishes the opportunity to make overlapping runs. He has pace and a lovely left foot which he uses to provide accurate passes and crosses. His addition on Brentford’s left side means they will be stronger going forward and will pose a greater threat from crosses with the Spaniard in their ranks.

Aged just 27, Reguilon still has a few years in him at the very top level and this spell with Brentford could prove to be a vital boost. Manager Thomas Frank has loaned former Tottenham hero Christian Eriksen in the past and revived his career. It is quite likely Frank could end up doing yet another Spurs’ player a favor by signing them.
