Santiago Gimenez’s journey is one of hard work, perseverance, and diligence. With him finally coming to show glimpses of the potential he has always had, clubs around Europe are slowly beginning to take note of him. Moreover, his pace, dribbling ability, and powerful shooting make him an exciting attacking prospect and his all-roundness makes him a very potent attacking option for any team.
As mentioned previously, Gimenez shifted to Mexico City, Mexico when he was only 3 years old. With his father Christian Gimenez being a player for Cruz Azul, the move was understandable and helped give Santiago his start in football as well. When he was 13 years old, the prodigal son made his way into the Cruz Azul academy, flying up the ranks and eventually making his club debut in 2017. Whilst he was still a youth player at the time, the player was deemed special enough to get his debut a little early. Notably, Gimenez would make his Liga MX debut two years later.
In 2022, following Cruz Azul’s ninth championship title win, and their first in 23 years, Gimenez joined Feyenoord on a four-year contract. With the player slowly coming to the peak of his powers, Santiago played a crucial role as Feyenoord went on to win the 2022–23 Eredivisie title. The following season saw Gimenez increase his output by a significant amount, scoring 23 goals across 30 appearances, and 31 goals overall in 2023, setting a record for the number of goals scored in the Eredivisie in a calendar year. All in all, the year was a successful one with Gimenez helping to secure a fourteenth KNVB Cup title for Feyenoord.
As for the 2024-25 season, Gimenez started as he had left off, winning the Johan Cruyff Shield, his third trophy with the club. Continuing his goalscoring form, Gimenez would go on to beat the record for the most number of goals in the Eredivisie by a Mexican, previously held by Hirving Lozano. One of his most important performances of the season came against Manchester City in the Champions League as he inspired his side to a 3-3 comeback from 0-3 down. Then in January 2025, the Mexican striker signed a €32 million, four-and-a-half-year contract with Serie A club AC Milan, assisting Joao Felix in his first-ever game for the club.
