Real Madrid booked their spot in the finals of the Super Cup after beating Mallorca 3-0. The Madrid giants were made to work hard for the opener as it took over an hour for them to find a way past a rigid Mallorca defence. Bellingham scored the opener on the hour mark and Valjent scored an unfortunate own-goal in the stoppage time to seal Mallorca’s fate. Rodyrgo then added one more with the final attack of the game to put some gloss on the scoreline.
Real Madrid went full strength into the semis as the injury concerns slowly come down. They started the game as favourites and got the job done as expected. The victory was made sweeter as they had the club legend and current Al-Ittihad striker, Karim Benzema watching on from the stands in Jeddah. This sets up an enticing El Clasico in the finale of the Super Cup this weekend.
Real Madrid squad dominated the opening stages of the game with Mbappe and Bellingham coming extremely close to opening the scoring. Mallorca held on before launching their first attack of the night through Larin. They then lost their captain Raillo to injury midway through the first half. Mallorca frustrated Real Madrid as their players squared up easily.
Especially, Maffeo renewed his heated battle with Vinicius Jr and cried foul at every coming together to catch the referee’s attention. This stop-start nature helped Mallorca keep Madrid at bay. They were hoping to hit on the break and hurt Madrid by continuing the same. Early in the second half, Tchouameni was involved in a clash of heads with Larin and had to be replaced because of a potential injury.
Real Madrid’s entire front three combined to produce a superb move that resulted in Jude Bellingham firing them ahead after beating four defenders on the line. Once Los Blancos took the lead, they didn’t look like the team to budge afterwards. Mallorca then rolled their dice with a triple substitution but Madrid frustrated their opponents by following their own style. Real Madrid had a few chances but couldn’t convert them.
They stamped the result with a late goal when Valjent turned a through ball into the box into his own net. Rodrygo then volleyed Vazquez’s cross home to triple their lead. Ugly scenes were on show after the game as Mallorca’s players were frustrated and wanted to take it out on their opponents. Madrid who were not quite at their best tonight would need to up the significantly on Sunday against rivals Barcelona.
Real Madrid Player Ratings vs Mallorca
Goalkeeper
Thibaut Courtois: 7/10- Could’ve spent the first half in the dressing room as he was virtually not called upon at all. Made a few claims in the second half and played some nice passes.
Defenders
Lucas Vazquez: 7/10- The captain put in some fine tackles to recover possession for his side. Stayed conservative at times to keep an eye on Darder. Supplied Rodyrgo late in the game to pick up an assist.
Aurelien Tchouameni: 7/10- Had an excellent chance to open the scoring in the first half but was denied by the Mallorca goalkeeper. Had to go off with a head injury in the second half. With David Alaba coming back, his stints at centre-back might be over soon.
Antonio Rudiger: 6.5/10- The usually imposing German defender was calm facing two physical strikes in Muriqi and Larin. Didn’t lunge into tackles and tried to play cautiously.
Ferland Mendy: 6.5/10- Posed an attacking threat to Mallorca as Vinicius and Mbappe were interchanging their positions on the left.
Midfielders
Federico Valverde: 7/10- Another all-action game for the midfield powerhouse. He was purposeful with the ball and created a couple of opportunities as well.
Eduardo Camavinga: 7.5/10- Tasked with screening the defence, the youngster did quite well against physical opposition. Despite taking some body blows, he controlled the tempo of the game.
Jude Bellingham: 8.5/10- Bellingham was denied in the first half but he broke the deadlock on the hour mark as he fired a shot past 4 defenders blocking the goal line. After struggling for goals till December, he can’t stop scoring now. His all-round game and chance creation have been excellent too.
Attackers
Rodrygo: 8/10- Could’ve provided Madrid the early breakthrough but was turned aside by Greif. Hit the crossbar in the move that led to their opener. Was full of creativity on the wing tonight. Eventually got on the scoresheet with the final attack of the game.
Kylian Mbappe: 7.5/10- Looked absolutely electric down the middle as he got the tricks and flicks out today. Switched positions in the fluid front three and had a shot that was saved but ultimately led to Bellingham’s opener.
Vinicius Jr: 6/10- He was flared up in a battle against Maffeo. The pair have some bad blood between them and it came to the fore again today. Vinicius was unable to keep his head down as he was often poked throughout the game. It did impact his actions on the ball as well.
Substitutes
Raul Asencio: 6/10
Daniel Ceballos: 6/10
Brahim Diaz: 6/10
Manager
Carlo Ancelotti: 8/10- The Italian named his strongest lineup and was happy to wait till the real chances came their way. He knows his side has the ability to churn out results and allowed them enough time to get the result. With injury concerns easing off, he’d hope for another similar outing on Sunday.
Mallorca Player Ratings vs Real Madrid
Goalkeeper
Dominik Greif: 7/10- A couple of huge saves to deny Rodrygo, Tchouameni, and Bellingham early in the game. He then kept Mbappe’s effort out but was beaten by Bellingham in the second half. If not for his saves, Mallorca could’ve easily conceded 5-6 times.
Defenders
Pablo Maffeo: 6/10- Always the one to pick up a tussle as he got into Vinicius’ head. He went down easily to catch the referee’s attention. He didn’t let the winger get the better out of him in the duels.
Martin Valjent: 5/10- Stayed as the deepest defender and got confused as Real Madrid’s attack was ever-changing. Was rooted on the goal line as Bellingham fired one past him. Lost his head late in the game as he scored an own goal and lost Rodrygo for the third goal.
Antonio Raillo: 6/10- The captain started the night strongly but it was cut short due to an injury just half an hour into the game. Would be disappointed as his unit sorely missed him in the second half.
Johan Mojica: 6.5/10- The full-back whos usually attack played the entire game rooted in his own half. Madrid’s wingers needed his constant attention and he to be switched on defensively.
Midfielders
Daniel Rodriguez: 6/10- He had a couple of chances to create some openings on the break. He did take them but Madrid’s good shape at the back repelled them easily.
Manu Morlanes: 6/10- He was overwhelmed in the centre of the park by Jude Bellingham and Valverde’s running power. Failed to create with the ball.
Omar Mascarell: 6/10- Similar to his midfield partner, had no clue as Real Madrid had multiple runners past him.
Sergi Darder: 5.5/10- The veteran couldn’t conuure his experience to trouble Madrid’s defence.
Attackers
Cyle Larin: 6/10- Had the first opportunity for Mallorca but needed to extremely clever with it. Failed to do much apart from that.
Vedat Muriqi: 5.5/10- The target man had an off night as he starved for serive. The few times he had the ball, he couldn’t make it stick and run at the opposition’s defence.
Substitutes
Jose Copete: 6/10
Takuma Asano: 6/10
Samu: 6/10
Robert Navarro: 6/10
Abdon Prats: N/A
Manager
Jacoba Arrasate: 5/10- His game plan to frustrate Real Madrid worked for an hour but in all honestly it wasn’t wise enough to keep doing for most of the game. Knowing how good Madrid’s forwards can be, his side had no reply once they went a goal down. Has to coach some attacking moves into the team.
