Antoine Griezmann - Antoine Griezmann to MLS

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann inches closer to MLS transfer with La Liga club not keen on contract extension

As per reputable Spanish publication house – ‘Marca’, La Liga club Atletico Madrid is not keen on giving a contract extension to their French international star Antoine Griezmann. The fact that the forward is one of the club’s highest earners, and his age will hit the 35 mark when his current contract with them expires in June 2026, might tempt Los Rojiblancos to exclude him from their roster moving ahead in the future.

Antoine Griezmann has been a legendary player for Atletico over the years turning in close to 400 matches for the club till now. He has been involved in 265 goal contributions (84 assists, and 181 goals) during his time at the Spanish side so far at the highest level. The 33-year-old has won three major trophies with Atletico in his career as of now.

If not Atletico Madrid, where will the French international head to next? The question has made its way among his fans and the football world. Reportedly, he has been linked with a potential transfer to MLS lately, and with the news of Atletico thinking to not offer him a contract extension, the link-up does appear to be holding strong.

Also, Antoine Griezmann has stated repeatedly that he does want Atletico to be his last European club. It further makes a transfer to MLS suitable to his desires. Even though, reports helm that people at Atletico Madrid believe that the forward could stay there beyond 2026, depending on his performances, and wage altercations, his future at the Spanish club after his ongoing contract expiration hangs up in the air as of now.

The French player was inquired about his future in one of the interviews last year. “Saudi Arabia? I understand those who have to go there, we are talking about incredible sums of money. Could I Go? I have a family, three children. It’s not an easy decision to make. The MLS is still my priority”. From his statement, it is quite evident that Griezmann does prefer a move to the USA over any potential Saudi transfer.

It could be fetched that ever since Lionel Messi established the MLS as a noteworthy league around the world, other big players are open to considering it as a preferred destination to see maybe the later stages of their career out and still be able to earn a decent chunk of wages. Not to forget being a part of a country’s culture and heritage that’s regarded as one of the greatest in the world economy.
