Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz

“It’s going to hurt”: Luis Diaz makes desperate appeal to Mohamed Salah and Liverpool amidst contract stalemate

Liverpool fans are faced with the daunting prospect of saying goodbye to Mohamed Salah at the end of the 2024/25 season. The 32-year-old is in the final year of his Liverpool contract and an exit on a free transfer seems likely with each passing day. The loss would be a huge one for the club considering how successful and productive Salah has been at the Merseyside club. The Egyptian has 214 goals and 92 assists in 352 appearances and alongside the fans, his teammates, too, are hoping for him to prolong his stay at Anfield.

Luis Diaz, who plays on the opposite flank of Salah in the Liverpool XI has requested the club and the player to reach an agreement over a contract extension. “It would be very hard to lose a key player like him. It’s going to hurt us a lot. He still has a year to think about it, it’s not easy.” Diaz did not hold back his emotions on the Mohamed Salah contract saga. At the same time, the Colombian also understood that the call would be a personal one and left it up to his colleague to make the right decision. Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah have been playing together for Liverpool since the former joined the team in 2022.

Mohamed Salah has started the new Premier League campaign in his usual effective manner. He already has three goals and three assists in the bag, ensuring Liverpool’s perfect start so far. The former Roma man is behind only Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race. The Egyptian king bagged a goal and two assists in the big game against Manchester United on the weekend where Salah also ignited speculation and debates surrounding his future in the Premier League.

Mohamed Salah provides an update on his Liverpool future

The Liverpool legend dropped a bombshell in an interview after the game against Manchester United. “I was coming to the game, I was saying, it could be the last time. Nobody in the club talked to me yet about contracts. We will see what happens next year”, were the words of Mohamed Salah. Liverpool fans were surprised at the current state of the contract talks. Despite nearing the mid-30s, Salah is still not showing any signs of fading off and his contribution to the team cannot be questioned.

If Salah were to leave the Premier League, the Saudi Pro League seems the most likely destination for the next step in his career. Middle Eastern giants, Al-Ittihad offered a transfer fee north of €200 million with a €1.7 million weekly salary in 2023. Although the move did not materialise, Saudi clubs will be more than attentive to Mohamed Salah’s contract situation at Liverpool to take a potential advantage at the end of the current European campaign.
