Manchester United and Napoli edge closer for Scott McTominay’s transfer

In the big recent breaking news in the 2024 summer transfer window, Scott McTominay is nearing a move to Italian giants, Napoli. According to the ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United is in constant contact with Napoli to take the final steps towards the completion of the deal. The midfielder is awaiting the final approval from United to travel to Naples and sign his contract.

The reported fee for Scott McTominay’s transfer is around €30 million with a 10% future sell-on clause to the English giants as well. Erik ten Hag was not willing to lose the 27-year-old this summer but agreed to a transfer to finance other deals including that of Manuel Ugarte. McTominay’s sale will also help the Red Devils scale up on the Financial Fair Play regulations.

The Scotland international has been a part of Manchester United for over 22 years. His departure will surely be a sore one for United fans. He has scored 29 goals and provided eight assists in 255 appearances for the club’s senior team since his debut under Jose Mourinho in 2017. Over the years, Scott McTominay has built a reputation of being a reliable backup option in midfield.

The tactical fit between Scott McTominay and Antonio Conte’s Napoli

Scott McTominay will be joining Antonio Conte at Napoli. The Italian took over the managerial duties this summer. Reportedly, the former Inter Milan coach spoke directly to the player to persuade him to come to Serie A. Conte has been using a 3-4-2-1 formation at Napoli, which is expected to revert to the manager’s preferred 3-5-2 with the arrival of Romelu Lukaku. Scott McTominay will be placed in the midfield with an expectation to make runs in the box.
