Despite ending the business end of the season, Pierre Lees-Melou’s influence on Stade Brestois has been making headlines, especially with the 30-year-old enjoying somewhat of a resurgence at the top level. The midfielder has almost always underperformed over the years, never truly hitting his potential despite spells at OGC Nice, Norwich City, and a few others.
But under his former coach, and current Brest coach, Eric Roy, Lees-Melou has thrived and begun to win over fans. This entire season has been a Pierre Lees-Melou’s renaissance with many even clamoring for the French midfielder to earn his first-ever call-up for the French national team. While that may yet happen, reports had indicated that the midfielder was set to miss out on the remainder of the season.
That was not confirmed but with Brest competing for a Champions League position in the Ligue 1, losing a player of his caliber would hurt the team.
Roy confirms that Lees-Melou will miss the remainder of the season
The club continue to sit third in the Ligue 1 standings but are only two points ahead of LOSC Lille, and four behind second place AS Monaco. While the gap above may be tough to overcome, the gap below is what remains dangerous especially with someone like Lees-Melou out injured. However, the rumours have now been confirmed via manager Eric Roy.
In his pre-match press conference, the Brest boss confirmed that Pierre Lees-Melou will miss the remainder of the season after he fractured his fibula. Roy also revealed that the midfielder will be operated on and he hopes that the 30-year-old is fit in time to make the Euro 2024 squad.
“For Pierre, the news is less good. The end of the season marked a for him, he suffered a fractured fibula, which he will be operated on during the week. It’s hard for him and for the group, he has all our support. We hope that he will be fit to resume this summer,” Roy said at a press conference.
